In the ancient Greek world, nothing of importance could happen without consulting the Oracle of the Temple of Apollo in Delphi. No important decision -either on state or family basis- could be made without the advice given by Pythia, the priestess who gave the oracular messages that were thought to be sent by Apollo.

Of course, this was not an unprofitable institution, and nobody got a message unless they had offered a present first. Thus, Delphi consisted of a complex of temples full of treasures and works of art.

Today Delphi is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece, and even though you cannot consult the oracle any longer, you will enjoy the scenery and experience its mystical aura.

It is built on the slopes of Mount Parnassos, in a magnificent setting overlooking the Gulf of Corinth, and the ancients thought that it was the centre of the world. The ruins consist of the Temple of Apollo, the Roman Agora, many treasuries from various cities and other monuments.

Above the temple is the 4th century theatre that staged plays during the Pythian Festival, and a wonderfully preserved stadium. Only a few minutes' walk away from the temple is the Castalian Spring, where visitors had to clean themselves before consulting the oracle.

The new town of Delphi, near the ancient site, is an attractive village situated on a precipitous cliff edge. Make sure not to miss the Museum of Delphi that has an outstanding collection of the treasures found in the site, and also houses the famous life-size statue of Iniohos (the Charioteer). When you have satisfied your archaeological concerns, you can enjoy your coffee or meal in one of the coffee shops or tavernas in the village.

You may also wish to visit the villages of Mount Parnassos, the most beautiful-and touristy- of which is Arahova, only 12 km from Delphi. It is a picturesque village built on a cliff at an altitude of 960 metres, very popular with the trendy Athenians during the skiing season due to the nearby ski centre. The ski centre is closed in summer, but but you can enjoy a stroll, visit the shops with souvenirs and taste the local delicacies such as cheese and pasta.
