The island of Kithira lies on the south of the Peloponnese, but it belongs to the group of the Ionian Islands. According to mythology, it was the birthplace of magnificent Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty.

Afrodite rose from the foam (afros) that was caused in the sea when Zeus, the Father of the Gods, castrated Cronos and threw his organ in the sea. The same story of sex and violence took place in Cyprus -according to another myth- so both islands claim the title of the beauty's birthplace.

Either way, Kithira is a beautiful island with many interesting places and wonderful beaches.

It has two ports, Agia Pelagia on the north-east coast, and Kapsali on the south. The first one is a pleasant village with pebbly beaches. The second is a picturesque port, with many tavernas and coffee-shops and an interesting nightlife. There are two beaches in the roundabouts.

On the hill above Kapsali is the beautiful capital, Kithira town or Hora. It has wonderful, white houses and a central square full of trees and flowers. The Venetian castle at the southern end of the town is an imposing building situated on a cliff, and offers stunning views of the port and the sea.

The island has many places worth visiting. The old village of Mylopotamos, with its beautiful -altough somewhat derelict- houses and the abandoned castle, is near the waterfall of Neraida (water-nymph), also known as Fonissa (murderess). Forget about the chilly name, and take a dip into the cold water among lush greenery.

If you like trekking, you can visit the cave of Agia Sophia, 2 km from the village. A legend says that Saint Sophia and her daughters, Pisti, Elpida and Agapi (Faith, Hope and Charity), visited the cave, so it was converted to a chapel and was dedicated to her.

Other inland villages are Mitata, Aroniadika, Pitsinades, and others. Avlemonas is a picturesque fishing village on the north-east, where you should taste fresh fish and delicious lobster.

The island has many beautiful beaches, like Kaladi, Melidoni and Fyri Ammos ( the last has been awarded the Golden Starfish by the EEC, a title that certifies the clarity of waters).

You will probably never forget this island, but if you want a souvenir to bring back home, just buy a bouquet of semprevives ( sempre viva= live for ever). This full-of-optimism yellow flower is said to grow only on very steep cliffs and it does not fade for many-many years. It may look artificial, but it's not. It's natural and always alive.
