Monemvasia is a spectacular castle-town on the east east coast of Lakonia, Peloponnese. Its name means 'single entry', as there is only one way that leads to the town. Looking at it from the mainland, you wonder whether it is an island, as it is reached only by a causeway from the mainland village of Gefyra. It is a huge rock with a midieval castle, inside of which there are old houses, churches, narrow cobbled streets with arches and steps. The houses have been wonderfully restored and are still inhabited, and some of them have been converted into hotels. Everything gives the impression of a phantasy-town, with the midieval atmosphere untouched by time, even though it is highly touristic. When you stroll down the streets, you have the feeling that sooner or later you will bump into knights, emperors and princesses. You can visit the 13th century Cathedral of Christ in Chains, the Church of St. Paul which now houses a small museum, and the fortress with the ruined upper part of the town. The town is so magical, that it's a pity that the single entry serves as exit, as well! Get A Yacht To Go There Now! |
